Sony VAIO YB laptops to run on AMD Fusion

We had HP and Lenovo, now it’s time for Sony to choose AMD’s new platform, Fusion, for their line of laptops, as we previously told you.

According to engadget.com, whose henchmen got a short hands on with a new VAIO laptop, Sony will release a 11.6 machine running on the E-350 Zacate chip (that is a 1,66 GHZ dual-core APU with integrated DirectX 11 graphics). The test unit also came with 500 GB of disk space and 4 GB of RAM, a HDMI port, 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth.

Final or not, the lid is surely funky, as it comes in pink (but I guess Sony will let you choose from a variety of color schemes). Although pink, the laptop looks and feels solid, without flex when typing and a solid hinge around the screen. The solid build doesn’t mean extra weight, as the laptop is easy to move around with just one hand.

On the downside, the battery life fell on the battlefield after a vulgar 3 hours and 6 minutes. Wait, wait, there’s a good excuse about it, as the laptop was running at the time a graphics benchmark based on Internet Explorer and was only feeding from an anorexic 3500mAh battery. Hopefully the retail versions will have the option to go for a stronger battery and enjoy the energy saving philosophy behind AMD Fusion technology.

For now, this seems the only downside of this future Sony release and we eagerly wait for late February to see it on shelves. Around that time, according to an AMD suit, all Zacate powered laptops should be available for purchase. Until then, feast on the first pics with the laptop and check back regularly as we’ll let you know when we find out stuff about pricing and hardware options.

The YB is out for and sale and it is as disappointing as it was demo as CES:

    weak battery for a Fusion
    slow hard drive, 5400 rmp
    weak speaker
    windows 3bit and not 64bit
    high price tag

SONY obviously didn’t do their homework.
