There were a lot of discussions about the 10.1 inch tablet coming from Samsung with the ambition of continuing the ravishing success of the 7 inch Galaxy Tab. The change of the screen size is maybe the most revolutionary aspect of the new device, as many people loved the 7 inch form factor of the first tablet. The slate runs Android 3.0, has a 1200 x 800 resolution screen, and comes with a Tegra 2 chip, which might be a little odd, considering that they just came up with their own line of dual core processors.
But most importantly, we caught the device on camera and we can now have a more educated guess about the slate. From the front, the device looks pretty generic, and at the time of the shoot it was almost completely covered in fingerprints. The back is a completely different thing. First, you notice the big and shiny Samsung logo, placed in the middle, on a bumpy region with a textured finish. Under the logo is the marriage certificate with Android, in the form of a little crest saying “with Google”. The tablet is to be held properly more in landscape mode, as the sides give a very good grip. In portrait mode, your fingers might touch the Samsung logo, which looks slippery, so to say.
Moving on the OS, there’s Android 3.0, which was a little modified to look better in landscape mode. The apps are grouped in a tabbed window and you can switch between categories by just touching the appropriate tab button. Another change is that you don’t have to drag an app to the top of the page, but just touch it and it will go up on his own (thanks for saving the trip for us).
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
The guy from Samsung jogged a little through the gallery app. Photos load up easily and pushing them to the edge of the screen to make room for another one and the pinch and zoom function work just fine. There’s also a little video playback in there, but the guy failed to let us know if there’s a HDMI output, although that would have been really easy to check. Overall, the tablet looks and fells very good, so fingers crossed for a reasonable price and a soon release date.
