Samsung Galaxy S2 caught on video at MWC 2011

Samsung’s main attraction points during this year’s Mobile World Convention in Barcelona were their new smart phone and tablet, both coming under the Galaxy monicker. While the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet will run on a Tegra 2 chip, for the smart phone the company decided to use one of their in house processors, maybe something from the new Exynos line.

Anyway, here’s a little video Mike made with the 4.27 inch Galaxy S 2 during the event, so lets see if the device has any chance of matching the popularity of the first in the series. The phone runs Android Gingerbread and comes on top with a diminutive TouchWiz 4.0 UI from Samsung, granting access to your phone book, calls and other applications. The OS feels snappy enough, although the transitions between some screens seemed just a little choppy.

One of the differences between S 2 and its predecessor is that has a partially metal finish, while the first one was completely out of plastic. The metal goes around the screen, while the back comes with a textured plastic finish, so you won’t drop it from your hand that easily. Other features include a 800 x 480 Super AMOLED display screen, dual cameras- 8 MP, 1080p recording in the back and 2 MP in front. The phone is just 8.49 mm thick and feels very, very light and it looks like Samsung ticked all the necessary elements from the check list when it comes to a good successor for Galaxy S.

The smart phone is said to be available in Europe as early as this month, while a US launch might follow rather quickly. Stay tuned for the short hands on video below and let us know what you think about the device in the comment section.
